The United States Department Agriculture (USDA) announced today that the “Food Pyramid”, the nation’s guide to healthy eating in one form or another since 1992, has been replaced by “My Plate”. “My Plate” is a simple circle divided into quadrants that contain fruits, vegetables, protein and grains. In addition to the plate, the logo also includes a “blue circle” which represents dairy products as part of a healthy diet.
USDA officials believe that the food pyramid had become too cumbersome and complex, trying to communicate too many different nutritional ideas. The new logo is based on the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, developed in 2010 and released on January 31, 2011. Click here to read the guidelines.
In summary, the new design incorporates these key dietary messages:
Balance Calories
- Enjoy your food, but eat less.
Foods to Increase
- Make half your plate fruits and vegetables.
Foods to Reduce
- Compare sodium (salt) in foods like soup, bread, and frozen meals, and choose foods with lower numbers.
